Part-time Employment

Basic Principles

  • ① International students (D2, D4) are generally not eligible for employment activities, so profit-making and employment activities are not allowed in Korea.
  • ② However, if confirmed by the affiliated university and approved by the competent immigration office in advance, part-time employment activities, typically at the level of a college student's part-time job, are permitted through the following procedures.

      Employment contract between the parties (standard labor contract, hourly wage stated)

    2. 02. Preparation of Part-time Employment Confirmation Letter

      Separate form, to be prepared by the university's international student coordinator.

    3. 03. Application

      Required documents attached, apply online or by visit.

    4. 04. Approval/Disapproval

      Affixing approval sticker or printing online approval letter.

Restrictions (Permissible Scope)

  • Activities that go against good morals or other social order (Enforcement Rule Article 27-2, Paragraph 2)

    【 Examples of business establishments under Article 2 of the Act on the Regulation of Public Morals Businesses and Article 2 of the Enforcement Decree 】

    1. 1. Game provision business under Article 2, Paragraph 6 of the "Game Industry Promotion Act" and complex distribution game provision business under Article 2, Paragraph 8 of the same Act.
    2. 2. Video viewing business under Article 2, Paragraph 16 of the "Act on the Promotion of Films and Video Materials."
    3. 3. Singing practice room business under Article 2, Paragraph 13 of the "Music Industry Promotion Act."
    4. 4. Accommodation business, bathhouse business (sauna business), and entertainment business (private room business) as stipulated by Presidential Decree among those specified in Article 2, Paragraph 1, Subparagraphs 2 to 4 of the "Public Health Control Act."
    5. 5. Dalanjujeom (singing bar with alcohol) business and entertainment bar business under Article 36, Paragraph 1, Subparagraph 3 of the "Food Sanitation Act."
    6. 6. Dance academy business and dance hall business under Article 10, Paragraph 1, Subparagraph 2 of the "Act on the Establishment and Use of Sports Facilities."
    7. 7. Other businesses stipulated by Presidential Decree that are likely to harm sound public morals or hinder the healthy development of youth.
  • Activities at workplaces of companies and employers with a history of penalties such as illegal employment, which restrict visa issuance.
  • Scope of activities in professional fields (E-1 to E-7).
  • Non-professional employment (E-9) and sailor employment (E-10) industries.
    1. * Examples: Manufacturing, construction, fishermen on vessels weighing 20 tons or more, etc.
  • Activities at foreign language education study facilities for minor students.
    1. * Examples: English kids cafe, English camp, foreign language academy, etc.
  • Activities of special type workers such as courier drivers, delivery service riders, designated drivers, insurance agents, study material teachers, door-to-door salespersons, etc.
  • Employment activities based on dispatch, subcontracting, or mediation relationships.
    1. * However, this excludes cases where a regional university, separately designated by the Minister of Justice considering regional characteristics, etc., arranges internship activities for international students through industry-academia cooperation.
  • Remote work.

Application Documents for Part-time Employment

  • ① Application form, alien registration card, passport.
  • ② Part-time employment confirmation letter, academic transcript or attendance certificate, language proficiency proof documents.
  • ③ Business registration certificate, standard labor contract, copy of employer's ID.
